Recycling Boost for Arun (Pots, Tubs & Trays)

As Cabinet member my portfolio covers cleansing and refuse collection. I am
very much committed to growing our recycling and diverting rubbish that would have gone to Landfill to be recycled instead.from the 01st of April you are now able to recycle even more of your refuse items in your recycling bin,

New items are:-
 Milk and drinks bottles;
• Bathroom bottles;
• Laundry/detergent bottles & tubs;
• Yoghurt, cream & soup pots;
• Ice cream & margarine tubs;
• Cosmetic pots & tubs;
• Food & ready meal trays;
• Fruit & vegetable punnets; and
• Plastic container lids (such as those used on coffee jars).

The items do need to be clean, but I urge everyone to embrace the new recycling as it's good for the environment as well as the tax payer as all recycled items are sold and profits are rebated to Arun to allow the Council to keep the Council tax frozen and to supplement other services  (about £750k a year)

Items that still can't be recycled are:

  • Plastic carrier bags and plastic film;
  • Expanded polystyrene;
  • Plant pots and seed trays;
  • Plastic toys; and
  • Plastic furniture.

Sometime from August 2015 on-wards a new mechanical recycling unit will come on line to help recycle the food waste in your weekly bin collection,  the food waste will go through an anaerobic digester to be converted to fertiliser, also hard plastics like CD's CD covers and hard plastics that currently can't be recycled will be converted to fuel pellets for energy from waste units, this is a great step forward. We are committed to sending more and more of our waste to our recycling plants.  The Ford Materials Recycling Plant is now the best in the country for it's quality of materials, manufacturers are voting with their feet to take more and more of the material for new items from the Ford Plant.

There has been built up an urban myth that recycled materials go abroad and are simply dumped elsewhere, so the argument follows  why should we recycle if this happens, this is lazy thinking and the facts do not back this myth up.

We make money out of recyclables and so it should be, We need to embrace solar power, Tidal wave power and as a green Conservative I am committed to conserving our environment,
